KPEX: Confidence in Complexity
When KPEX launched, it brought together New Zealand’s four largest media companies—TVNZ, Stuff, NZME, and MediaWorks—in a bold joint venture. Their challenge? To establish a programmatic media trading business in a complex, fast-moving industry, with the governance expectations of four heavyweight shareholders.
From the outset, CEO Richard Thompson knew KPEX needed more than bookkeeping. They required a commercially minded finance partner who could build robust systems, instil discipline in reporting, and give both management and the board the clarity to make confident decisions.
We stepped in as their outsourced finance team, embedding ourselves as a close partner to Richard and the wider leadership. Early initiatives focused on getting the foundations right: correcting systems, strengthening revenue-share calculations, and putting in place secure controls that removed room for error. Alongside this, we built a full budget framework and shifted reporting from backward-looking accounts to forward-looking forecasts — giving leaders the tools to shape the future, not just record the past.
Richard reflects: “Greenhawk were outstanding to work with. They acted as a true business partner, providing the management and board confidence in the business’ performance and considerably enhancing controls to decrease potential risks.”
“As a technology-driven organisation, KPEX needed a partner that could understand and react to the dynamics of a fast-changing industry. I would recommend Greenhawk to anyone looking for a highly engaged, proactive and commercially minded finance partner.”
The impact was immediate. With trusted numbers at hand, the board could debate strategy instead of accuracy. Management gained a sounding board for commercial decisions. And when the CEO role fell vacant, our partnership received the ultimate vote of confidence — we were asked to step in and carry part of the CEO’s responsibilities until a successor was appointed.
By the time KPEX’s shareholders chose to bring the service in-house and retire the entity, the business had moved from start-up uncertainty to operating with clarity, discipline, and financial maturity.
Because in a sector where speed and complexity collide, confidence in the numbers makes all the difference.
I would recommend Greenhawk to anyone looking for a highly engaged, proactive and commercially minded finance partner.
Richard Thompson, CEO, KPEX
